Substitute Coordinator/Supervisor

Who would have known that an elective choice in high school to help in special day classes would lead to a career path so many years later? What Iris did know, was that she enjoyed working with students, supporting them in accomplishing small goals, and providing friendship to them.  After completing a degree in sociology, Iris wasn’t quite sure what path she would take.  She traveled a bit and lived in Guam for a year before she moved back home and began working at a group home for emotional disturbed youth. This was a learning experience, but after two years Iris wanted to explore other options. One day 20 years ago Iris responded to an ad in the newspaper looking for behavior assistants to work with autistic students in the school setting. She applied for the position and began working the following week.  Iris worked one-on-one with specific students before she went on to substitute with different students daily and different diagnosis so she could gain more experience. As the current substitute supervisor, Iris helps hire and support Anova’s incoming behavior assistants while still working in classrooms. “In my 20 years with Anova, I have helped in many different capacities, but being part of a wonderful team that is dedicated to supporting the children we serve with full intent is my reason for continuing in this path.” - Iris Romero
